Chilly temps have blossoms in Deep Snooze!

Wooster Square Cherry Blossoms: Later Bloom Update

As the Wooster Square Blossom Blogger, I've always kept a close watch on our peak bloom times, often comparing them to Washington DC's blossoms. Historically, Wooster Square blooms about 15 days after Washington DC. However, this year’s cold snap has thrown a wrench in the works, and it looks like Mother Nature has other plans for our beloved cherry blossoms.

What's Happening with Washington DC?

The DC Cherry Blossom Watch Blog reports: "An early bloom is looking increasingly unlikely. It's shaping up more likely to be a normal-to-late bloom (i.e., the period from the very end of March into early April). That puts April in play for peak bloom for the first time in several years." Given this update, it's clear that the extended winter chill is delaying the blossoms' debut.

What Does This Mean for Wooster Square?

Based on our historical averages and the recent weather patterns, it seems like my initial guess of an April 6th peak is now more unlikely unless we get an unexpected warm spell. With DC's peak potentially shifting to early April, we might be looking at our peak around mid to late April.

Here's a look at our historical peak bloom dates to give you an idea:

| **Year** | **Peak Bloom Date** |

|----------|---------------------|

| 2018     | April 25             |

| 2019     | April 21

| 2020     | April 12

| 2021     | April 14

| 2022     | April 16

| 2023     | April 12

Analyzing the Late Development

The lingering cold weather has kept the trees in a state of dormancy, delaying the blooming process. While this might mean a longer wait, it could also result in a more synchronized and vibrant bloom. Think of it as the trees taking their sweet time to put on the best show possible!

While the delayed bloom might test our patience, it will be worth the wait. Keep an eye on the weather, and let's hope for some warm days to give the cherry blossoms a little nudge.

Take a spin around the Square with some photos this weekend.
