Brrr—New Frost Alert during critical last stage before Peak

It's been a chill-fest here in Wooster Square, with temperatures in the 40s that feel more like the 30s. After days of a mix of cold rain and brief sun, tonight we’re staring down the threat of frost damage—temps expected to drop to 29°F. Holy Hanami, indeed! 2025 has been particularly cold and the blossoms have been taking their time.

At Stage 4 (peduncle elongation) and Stage 5 (the puffy pre-bloom phase), our delicate blossoms are especially vulnerable to the nip in the air. When the temperature nosedives, the fragile tissues of the buds and petals risk freezing, which could delay or even damage the full, radiant bloom we all look forward to. It’s a harsh reminder that our cherry blossoms don’t just need sun and rain—they need a bit of warmth to truly flourish into their peak beauty. So fingers crossed that the temperature doesn't fall below freezing for very long. I'll check on them in the afternoon, I have things to do in the morning.

I’m holding out hope that in the next few days, the weather shifts into our favor—warm and dry enough for those perfect picnic conditions (pizza and all!) in the park. Until then, I’ll be here, braving the cold, documenting every shiver of the branches, and proving that even in the frostiest moments, there’s beauty worth celebrating. Stay bundled up, and let’s keep our eyes on that serene sakura surprise just around the corner!

The photos I took this morning are showing about 50% of the trees moving to the last stage before peak, puffy white/pink. Today's chill can't match the power of the beautiful sun in the park today. We are about 4-7 days until peak. Stay tuned and enjoy today's beautiful puffy blossoms!
