Wooster Square Cherry Blossoms reach stage 4! Peduncle elongation!

Roxie and I were out early this bright, brisk morning, and the Square was buzzing — not just with blossoms, but with people who care for our park. The New Haven Parks Department was out grinding stumps from last year’s dead tree, and our friends at the Urban Resources Initiative (URI) — who plant trees around New Haven for free as part of a Yale program — were on site too. We’re so grateful for everything they do to keep our sweet square thriving.

As for the blossoms: We have transitioned to Stage 4, and the trees are holding strong after the cold nights.

Still — the light is gorgeous, the buds are stretching, and the blossoms are clearly gearing up for their big moment.

The Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Stages — Quick Refresher

Stage 1: Green Bud

What it looks like: Tiny, tight green nodes at the tips of twigs. Timeline: The starting line — can last weeks if the harbor breeze is feeling sassy.

Stage 2: Florets Visible

What it looks like: Buds swell and separate, revealing the first pinkish‑white hints inside. Timeline: Usually late March or very early April.

Stage 3: Extension of Florets

What it looks like: The florets push outward, giving the trees a soft “fuzzy” look from afar. Significance: The anticipation phase — the Square starts to look alive.

Stage 4: Peduncle Elongation (current stage)

What it looks like: The stems stretch and lift the buds; petals become more visible. Timeline: Typically 6–10 days before peak bloom.

Stage 5: Puffy White

What it looks like: Tight, round, white “popcorn” buds. Timeline: Peak bloom is usually 4–6 days away.

Stage 6: Peak Bloom

What it looks like: 70% of blossoms fully open — the showstopper moment. Window: Usually 4–7 days, longer if the weather is cool and calm.

The Pink Blizzard (Post‑Peak)

What it looks like: Petals fall like confetti, covering Wooster Square in pink snow. Bonus: It’s magical — even if it means the season is ending.

Photos from this morning are coming right up. Stay tuned — your Blossom Blogger is on the case, and the petals are getting ready for their performance.
