Square's Sakura's taking Sweet Time!
Ok, I've already been asked the same question a few times early in our Blossom process this year.
And the question?
If the weather was so warm this winter and with global warming and all, why aren't the Cherry Blossoms well on their way?
Good question.
I'll attempt to explain based on my 12 years of Blossom Blogging.
You see, it's a combination of things. A cold and snowy winter can be have the same effect as a mild winter, like the one we experienced. You see, there is much more daylight in March. Yesterday we had 12 hours and 11 minutes of light. So even sunny chilly weather gets them going.
If the temperature is warm, you can almost see them growing bigger before you eyes!
The key this year is the cold snap that started about 13 days ago. Just today, March 21st, it is struggling to get to the 50's.
So what do we do? We wait.
I'm still sticking with Sunday, April 16th to be peak bloom for our 50th Annual Cherry Blossom Celebration!!
The Wooster Square Blossom Blog has been showing and predicting peak bloom with 100% accuracy for 11 straight years!***
