Predicting April (Blossom) Madness!!

Wooster Square Setting Stage for 40th Annual

 Cherry Blossom Festival

Some of you may think that Summer jumped ahead of Spring this year in Wooster Square. And you well could be right since down the road in Bridgeport yesterday the temps hit a record breaking 81.

Welcome to New England.

Why should we expect anything else? In the past 3 years we have had 2 hurricanes, a winter we called Snowmegeddon, last years "June"uary, the Blizzard of the Century (Frankenstorm 2013), and for fun let's throw in the earthquake we had too (while sitting in our seats at the New Haven Open).

Sometimes it is just nice to know that everything is the same here in the Wonderful World of Wooster Square. And this weeks temperatures will have a dazzling effect on our growing Pink and White Precious Blossoms! At the beginning of this year, Cheryl and I sat down and looked at the past years dates of when our Cherry Blossoms Pop! here on Hughes Place and when Peak Poppadge (70%). By putting our Blossom Caps together, we came up with the date of April 10. Today. Then, by Blossomating from photos of this years progress compared to last, I narrowed in on April 12. Whew. Because Tuesday the Blossoms looked like this on Hughes Place:

Calm Before Pink Storm

This business of Cherry Blossom predicting has been going on in Japan for thousands of years. And now our nations Capitol Washington D.C. to Philly and right here in our little piece of Shagri-la Wooster Square.

The National Park Service is the main authority for prediction when their blossoms will pop. But they have moved their date three times. As you can see from their live cam, They are in Peak Poppadge!

April Madness

On my daily treks back and forth to New Haven Fitness, I was mentally thanking fellow Michigander, fellow Huge Detroit Tiger Fan, and Famous Five Thirty Eight Blogger Nate Silver. You see, he gave everyone odds for picking teams for March Madness based upon his mathematical calculations (as well as predicting Obama's victory). Not going with my heart (Michigan State beating Louisville) and by using Mr. Silver's  figures Cheryl and I managed to win our pool.

What if  Nate Silver were to use his Five Thirty Eight Blog to rate Blossom Predictions such as the National Park Service and the Wooster Square Blossom Blog? He might call it something like a:

Blossom Confidence Index

You see, by extrapolating the data Nate Silver would see the Signal through the Noise... all you have to do is stay tuned to the Wooster Square Blossom Blog to be 100% sure when your favorite World Famous Wooster Square Cherry Blossoms are Beaming Brightly. In fact, if I can quote Mr. Silver who might say: "For your Blossom Viewing Experience you get more Smileage from the Wooster Square Blossom Blog than any other place on the planet".

Thanks Nate!

Since this is a Photoblogumentary, let's get to the photo evidence and see what is going on around the Square from today's trip to the gym.

Yesterday as I said was the warmest day of the year by far. The rest of the week the weather will be warmer and these guys are growing by leaps and bounds everyday. In one day we are slightly pinkier.

As you can see, here on Hughes Place we will have Blossoms Popping this weekend. Just in time for the 40th Annual Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival. The Park is usually 3-5 days after that. And our Peak Poppadge is possibly a week or two away. But WHY WONDER? Sign up for email to get your latest Blossom Blogging news delivered right to your favorite device.
