Global Warming vs Wooster Square Cherry Blossoms 2023

 Some Expert opinion

I always get the question. Does climate change affect when Cherry Blossoms Bloom? Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, anyone can tell you, the short answer is yes. However, it isn't necessarily a progression warmer and warmer every year. Each year is in its own little bubble.

Today, google cherry blossoms and you have a kajillion hits. Back then, not so much. Since I have been blogging here in 2012 I had to hunt, research and mostly, just made it up as I went along! But soon, as the internet flourished, there are many sites that track and predict when Cherry Blossoms Bloom.

In a nutshell, as days get longer, (i.e. more sunlight) in conjunction with warming temperatures aids to the blooming process.

Even base on observation, temperatures and the weather, the National Park Service says that it is nearly impossible to predict peak bloom within 10 days.

Think of it as the best darn guess possible based on historical patterns and trends.

But wait! There's more!

It seems that maybe there is some people who take predicting to a whole new level. In 2011 the University of Washington, Kyung Lee University and Seoul National University wrote a complicated mathematical paper on Cherry Blossoms.

National Park Service spokesperson Mike Litterest explains that after the Cherry trees go dormant, they start counting the number of heating days. Washington DC's temp data is fed into a computer and spits out numbers.

Also, Litterist explained it’s like a points system with a specific end result. You're working your way towards a total number.

That lucky number is 221.2 heating days for Washington DC.

According to my records, our Cherry Blossoms usually peak bloom around 16 days after DC's.

Geeze, kinda makes this little blog seem small! They have a computer cranking out numbers continually until they Bloom!

What we do here at the Wooster Square Blossom Blog is show you through each step of the Cherry Blossom Process. And, in my own humble opinion I give my prediction for peak.

100% accuracy for 11 straight years!!**

**I take pictures of the process and show and tell you when they are blooming!

  1. Moved to Wooster Square late last summer and was talking with my partner tonight about when we might expect to see the Cherry Blossom festival everyone talks about. Stumbled onto your page after doing some digging. You're awesome! This has brought us so much joy.
