While much of the US sizzled, we here New England had one of the coldest years in 30 plus years. And it just wasn't the snow. It was the blistering cold that lasted all winter. Even our "Snowmeggeddon" a few years back, just didn't have the sustained super surreal severe shivery status.

What effect will all this cold and snow have on our World Famous Wooster Square's Cherry Blossoms?

Will they be late?

Will they even bloom?

Before you all go into a
Horrendous Horrible Hanami Hissy fit,
Yes Virginia, there will be Cherry Blossoms!

All week Washington DC has been wondering these
same questions. In fact, in my direct "Blossom Line"
the the National Park service, I have found out some additional information to put your hearts and minds at ease.

So while I gather up all the bonified blossom business in the Blog Mainframe (and some Pertinent Pizza News), buckle up for some photos
of our Super Sweet Sakura Square!

Just when you think it can't get more exciting here in Wooster Square and New Haven, we have our snowbirds arriving. No, not the folks that abandon our Super Square of Humble Perfection (nobody does that anyway!) for Florida, but our Eagle pair! Last year, our Eagles, aptly named Pepe and Sally nested right on the New Haven line. One day Cheryl came home and said she saw one flying.

I grabbed my camera, tripod and we went to see.
I have a thing for birds, bees and blossoms!

Pepe Proudly Puts New Haven Roots

We saw both, we assume they have eggs.

So, did the cold and snow of the Northeast, particularly Wooster Square and Washington DC, have any effect on our
Precious Pink and White Pretties?

Heck No!

But Washington pushed out it's peak dates:
From April 8-12
to
April 11-15

We are sticking with the April 24-29
with peak poppadge on Sunday,
April 27th. Which happens to be the day of the Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival!

Speaking of Pizza!

The Eater also had an interesting article about New Haven's Modern Apizza, frequently voted New Haven's favorite. Owner
Bill Pustari has taken New Haven Pizza across the county!

Modern has locations out west and all over the place!

They sell their apizza at Safeco Field in Seattle!
(Safeco Field is voted #1 for Craft beers in baseball too)

How cool is that?

Despite Chill, High Hopes Honorable Hanamians

Washington D.C. National Park Service and
The Wooster Square Blossom Blog Announce
Peak Poppadge Dates for 2014!!

The end is near! Of winter that is. And what can we say? Since this is a family blog, let's just say to winter... good riddance, hasta la vista, its been real & been nice but it hasn't been real nice, don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you, see ya- wouldn't want to be ya, winter- really its not you... its me, don't call us, we'll call you....

The Blossom Blog Mainframe, in collaboration with Google, the NSA, Eric Snowden, IBM's Watson, and more importantly... flipping quarters 5 out of 7, help to determine when our Historic World Famous Wooster Square's Cherry Blossoms will Peak.

We use history, weather, mathematics, photography, snacks and sometimes smelling salts. Following our Big Bright Beautiful Blossoms can make you hungry and downright dauntingly disturbingly daffy dizzy!

That being said, and based on my budget ($0.00) and that of my counterparts in Washington (2,000,000,000+), it would seem they would crush me in our Blossomations. (estimates of when our blossoms will be at peak).

Sound complicated? Not really, all you have to do is hold your device and scroll. Let us crunch all the numbers while you crunch on a Cheryl's special pie from Wooster Street's Abate's (pepperoni and garlic well done).

The Blossom Blogs patented formula that has been 100% accurate (source:fullofit.com) has
attracted the attention of a

Mr. James Perry
Chief, Resource Management

National Parks Service

Mr. Perry and I exchanged trade secrets and agreed to collaborate on our prospective precious pretty perfect park pink Cherry Blossom Prediction.

While I gather the information we shared,
and what I can Blossomate from the data,
why don't we take a look around Wonderful World of Historic Wooster Square to see what is budding!

Fact: Every day is a Holiday in Wooster Square!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Washington DC predicts their Cherry Trees
(minus the one George tragically chopped but quickly fessed.)
 will peak:

April 8 through April 12

You see, when the tips start to turn green, that is when the Ballistic Blossoms Begin Blooming, we wait with baited breath.

I can draw the following from comparing the two charts,
how many days our peak has been since theirs, because its warmer down there.... for those without cable or internet.

In 2011 our Peak was 28 days past Washington's

In 2012 our Peak was 17 days past Washington's

And in 2013 our Peak was 12 days past Washington.

What does this all mean?
Who knows, really.

The Blossom Blog Predicts our
World Famous Wooster Square
Peak will be

April 24 through April 29

So this years prediction is 17 past their peak.

I like that thought.

I see green creeping in!

Burrr! But Beautiful Blossoms Brave Brisk Barometric Brumal Blast

2014 Wooster Square Blossomation Update!

We made it to March! There is light at the end of the tunnel. Cherry Blossom Festivals around the world are just beginning. Leading the way, Japan, of course, who invented Hanami, or blossom viewing over 1000 years ago,
That's a lot of neck bending and sake sipping,
Sweet Studious Sakura Square Supporters!!

What
is nice that you feel the sun now, it actually feels warmer, like laying in a tanning bed in a meat locker. But warmer nonetheless. The Wonderful World of Wooster Square is one frozen iceberg, with just patches of melting from the sun.

You know what likes the sun too? Our super salient sakuras, that's who. Even though the temps have been south of freezing, even though the ground has been snow covered since who knows when... it's that hot big ball in the sky that is drawing out some of Historic World Famous Wooster Square's first signs of spring!

March is a when we start getting news from Japan to Washington DC of when their precious pink pretties pop! Along with all sorts of charts and figures.

All of this data is fed into the
Blossom Blog Mainframe,
ingurgitating to assay rather importunately.
Then I just take a Wicked Wonderful Square
Blossomation

Before we see what all the dates are for Japan and Washington, let's see what else we can find in the frozen tundra... formerly know as Wooster Square!

Big Man on Campus

In case you don't know, Bill Iovanne, Jr,
(that is his families well respected funeral home,
a fixture on Wooster Square)
dug out World Famous Historic Wooster Square with his bare hands. Well, not his bare hands, but with his own guts and determination. Lot's of Benjamins too.

He brought in huge construction equipment, huge dump trucks, plows, tow trucks and New Haven's Finest and lots of coffee and doughnuts.

They worked all through the night digging out and finished at 4:30 in the morning.

Shake his hand and say thanks at the

Japan Sets Stage for
Sakura Sight Seeing

Japan loves their Hanami Heaven
so much that is can last from March 5 (this years first blooms) through sometimes into May. That long you ask? Well, they planted them all over the Islands so they mature according to their location. To make it easy, they
make a map and you grab some sake and a couple of months worth of food and make a vacation out of your Honorable Heavenly Hanami experience.

Washington DC sets
Peak Poppadge Dates!

For those new to the blog, the art of Cherry Blossom prediction is a fluid process. So many factors go into when they will bloom, that predicting them correctly is like finding a weatherman to give you the right forecast every night!
Peak Poppadge is described as when 70% of the trees are peaking.
Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are literally laughably lousy, lucky loser like.

But Washington D.C. has the
National Park Service
as its Peak Poppadge Authority and they set the standards that all blossom predictors use for their Cherry Blossomations.

So they should be right, I mean they have a
$2,750,000,000 Annual Budget.
(we shall see)
